Cable Landing Station and main facilities
Barcelona cable Landing Station
AFR-IX will build the Landing station that will host submarine cables reaching Barcelona. The building will be used as landing station, but there will also be some space for collocation Data Centre and an office space.
The client idea was that the building itself explained their core business, from that consideration we wanted to show the importance of the sea and water, and this is why we worked with a blue metal skin that will play with the reflections to refer as the sea water movement.
This facade was also useful to unify a building with the office in top and technical floors on lower stories. The office will have natural light and cross ventilation thanks to its location on top of the building and the patio on the penthouse.
Water is required for cooling the Hyperscale DC's but at the same time we will use it as an element to pacify the masterplan.
The DC park is located in Johor, near Singpore.
The DC park is 700 acres, and it allocates hyperscale DC's and main commercial buildings.
Sedenak DC Park
Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) wanted to provide the first Data Centre Park for hyperscale clients, with DC's of at least 50MW IT power.
At the same time their goal consisted on integrating the DC park of 700 acres in a bigger development of 7,000 acres that will be a new city where IT, research, medical, pharma can easily develop their business and use the advantages of green power and fast connectivity.
The plot requires specific infrastructures as telco fibre, power (even a combined cycle plant needs to be provided) and water. And we have used all this elements to design the project and use its infrastructures as planning elements.
As the client is an internet and content provider, the building at night it will be a screen for clients to interact.
The DC has a modular design so the building it will be able to grow with the demand.
The DC will allow 4 phases.
Tier III Data Centre in Malaysia
A Telco, internet and fibre provider will build a modular Data Centre, that can grow at least to 25MW IT power.
Despite most of the Data Centres, that they try not to be seen, in that case the client was asking for an Iconic Data Centre, not only from technology side, where we proposed the most efficient Data Centre in Malaysia using Tri-gen with Natural Gas; but also to be Iconic on the architecture side in order to get people talking about it. As it is an internet company we suggested a media facade that can interact with clients.
At the same time they wanted to be modular, this is why the project is designed in such a way that can be built in 4 phases while we continue with normal operations.
In such a big project the maintenance and energy consumption will be very important in terms of cost, so we will use passive and active solutions to do a real sustainable project.
Position, orientation, private and public transport
Nanjing RNG horsetrack
Royal Nanjing Group will own the world’s largest racetrack with a capacity of 250,000 people and stables for 5,000 horses. It also includes seven restaurants, convention rooms, a shopping mall, an 888 room hotel, as well as 1,000 apartments.
In a project this size logistics is a key issue, either for transportation or internal workflows. This is the reason we gave such an importance to the units’ distribution over the ground. Moreover, energy consumption will be very high and therefore, both passive and active energy saving systems, are very important. Beyond energy consumption, in this case, the most relevant issue in terms of sustainability will be health and pollution, a negative aspect commonly found in China that may affect not only the people but also the horses. Among other solutions, we will use the traditional Chinese architecture and the wetlands in order to generate microclimates to control it.
Mix-Used development in Kuala Lumpur
Located in a privileged landscape, nearby a lake shore just few kilometres away from the city centre, the developer Country Heights will erect a complex consisting of four residential towers, a "street mall", a sports centre and a hospital.
The project faces towards the golf course and the lake turning its back to the highway. The treatment of different shopping routes through the mall is very important and seeks to transform the act of buying into a daily experience, where families may enjoy many recreational areas, the lakes, parks, shopping areas as well as semi-outdoor "Food & Beverage" space. The lake is not only used in terms of visual and recreational advantages, but also to apply innovative energy efficient solutions such as hydroelectric power generation with low head turbines, heat exchanging advantages due to the lower temperature of the lakes water at 80 meters depth, as well as a source of water to irrigate.
Mix-Used development in Johor Bahru
Located in a strategic junction between two highways, IMC will build a complex consisting of four residential towers, an office building, a shopping mall, "shop-offices" and a "street mall".
First, we sought a disposition that would allow the site to create green and public spaces around the shop-offices leaving cars on the perimeter. A distribution that left the residential area as far as possible from the highway to minimize pollution and noise impact, and where the office building appeared as an icon in the intersection. The mall played with the curious shape of the highways U-turn. As for the design, we wanted to create a homogenous single unit as simple and clear as possible. This is why we adopted the horizontal lines as main instrument of design, sometimes in form of railings others in the form of balconies.
LEITAT Technological Centre in Terrassa (Barcelona)
The new Technological Centre is located in a forest outside the city. The place was not chosen by chance. The job of those creative workers demands a relaxing, quiet and suggestive environment. Many of them spend all day there. They will have a dining bar and a basketball court to enjoy some time off.
The LEITAT philosophy is based on virtuality. The company itself is recreated and redesigned every day. The objectives of the research are constantly moving, therefore, the concept of flexibility dominates the project. Furthermore, the Terrassa City Council is very concerned with the environment conservation, this is why the building by adapting its shape to the mountain and by the usage of a mirror photovoltaic facade, helps to make the building disappear through the forest.

Borneo Highlands Ressort
Settled in a magical landscape in the mountains of Sarawak, just in the border between Malaysia and Indonesia, surrounded by tropical forests, there is a Golf Resort. Tourism & Leisure, was appointed to redo the resort’s business plan as well as provide it with a renovated and more effective marketing strategy. Complementing Tourism & Leisure effort, B-barcelona has been commissioned to design the new master plan of the resort, and perform the architectural design of the different pieces that will compose it. The resort will have a cultural and amusement core, two family oriented hotels, bungalows among the trees, a MICE brand hotel. The star site of the resort shall be a boutique hotel designed with a large cantilever floating over the cliff between Malaysia and Indonesia border and astonishing views overlooking the Kalimantan.
Residential building in Yangon
Myanmar has recently opened its borders, actually the urban planning has not evolved as fast as the construction booming, creating some atypical designs, as it happens in the case which concerns to us.
In this projects plot, it is allowed to build a nine-storey block keeping a distance to the plots limit as short as 1.5 meters. This means that the building will be very close and directly facing to the next building which leads us to an important lack of privacy and natural light. That is why the main feature of our project is to do angles on the side facades to get a more pleasant and intimate view.
Passive energy saving solutions, such as insulation, solar protection and ventilation to achieve comfortable spaces without air conditioning, and local materials has been used to define the design.
